“… Dream of symbolic exchange and use, beyond value and equivalence. In other words, a sacrificial logic of consumption, gift, expenditure, potlatch, and the accurse portion”
Does this mean that the object does not actually matter? Is it rather whatever is projected onto it? Is it similar to the idea of fashion as a commodification of the past, which enables it to have new meaning for further consumption?
Past = Private / Public Realms
- intimate universe, projective, imaginary and symbolic
- object has status like a mirror of the subject?
- Explores everyday life
Present = Screen / Network
- No mirror, rather there is operational surface of communication.
• Networks, contact contingency, feedback, generalized interface
- Television: own body and universe become a control screen
- People no longer project themselves into their objects…
When did we ever do that? Reference person in the old car ads… So, that we could project ourselves into the car.

”No more fantasies of power, speed and appropriation linked to the object itself, but instead a tactic of potentialities linked to usage: mastery, control, and command, an optimization of the play of possibilities…”

- Vehicle as a capsule
- Surrounding landscape unfolds like a televised screen
- before: lived in projectile
Japanese talking car?
“Deliberate consultant and partner in the general negotiation of a life style”
- you are connected: subjects presence with their own objects, an uninterrupted interface?
I do not understand the importance of it… Is it because the objects are now communicating back? So, you cannot be projecting yourself into the object if it has its own personality?
- Speed nor displacement doesn’t matter anymore
Internet renders this useless. I can be anywhere faster than I could with the past speed and displacement of the car. Or I can do more things in a video game that defy the limitations of gravity and physical pain, without any of the repercussions. - social type of competition or prestige doesn’t matter (reality television and rich… is there a leveling out of social status… if not economically, but socially? i.e. the hills?)

car is desacrilized… (more about the amount of consumption)
“no more expenditure, consumption, performance, but instead regulation, well tempered functionality, solidarity among all of the elements of the same system, control and global management”
Is this a fair generalization? We are consuming more than ever and I do not think that tempered functionality would be a fair description of much of anything produced today.
“Private telematics: each person sees themselves in at the controls of a hypothetical machine isolated in position of perfect and remote sovereignty, at infinite distance from the root of origin.

… satellization of the real or “hyperrealism of the simulation”
“The era of hyper reality now begins. What was once projected mentally and psychologically, what was once lived out on earth as metaphor, as a mental or metaphysical scene, is henceforth projects into reality, without any metaphor at all, into an absolute space which is also that of simulation”
- Space of inhabitation conceive as receiver and operations
- Regulating everything from a distance (work, consumption, play, leisure, social relations)
Isn’t that what we always wanted? All of the good stuff from reality purified so that we no longer have to deal with the bad? The simulation removes us from all pain and suffering while still being able to do all that we want.
Tangent note: teaching students… frustration and difficulties completing tasks b/c they do not understand the difficulties and frustrations involved with learning something. Have video games, mass consumption, and low standards ruined the youth?
3 tendencies form modern era…
1. The displacement of bodily movements and efforts into electric commands
2. Operational abstractions of elements and functions and their homogenization in a single virtual process of functionalization
3. Miniaturization, in time and space, of processes whose real scene is that of infinitesimal memory and the scene, which they are equipped.
Problem:
- Electronics render our daily lives obscene and useless
- Presence of TV changes habitat into an “archaic envelope”
- “The real life appears as a large useless body”

- no longer any human scale
- remains are concentrated effects, miniaturized and immediately available
- change from human scale to nuclear matrices
- body seems superfluous
- everything reduced to a few miniaturized highlights (towns and countryside)
- left with immense free time… instanteity of communication reduced everything to succession of instances
body, landscape, and time progressively disappear as scenes
- advertising invades everything
- monopolizes public life inis exhibition
- advertising organizes the architecture and super objects
- gigantic spaces of circulation, ventilation and ephemeral connections
